Hockey player scores with Chiropractic

Chiropractic techniques are proving to be effective in treating sports injuries. Former NHLer Gary Roberts would agree.

After almost a decade playing in the National Hockey League, Gary Roberts feared that his days as a professional athlete were finished.

Thirty years old at the time and a left winger for the Calgary Flames, Roberts suffered a neck injury that left him with severe nerve damage and numbness in his arms. Repeated surgeries and rehab had little effect.

“I couldn’t hold a steak knife to cut my food,” he recalls. “My career was over. I was a pretty lost soul.”

But then, after a visit to a sports chiropractor in 1996 to relieve stress and reduce scar tissue in his upper spine and neck, Roberts regained his strength and mobility. He returned to the ice to play professional hockey for another 13 years.

“It saved my life,” says Roberts, who eventually retired from the NHL four years ago. He is now an advocate of chiropractic treatment as a complement to proper nutrition and training techniques - a program offered in his eponymously named Gary Roberts High Performance Centre at the Fitness Institute in North York. His highly regarded fitness and nutrition regimen is customized to his clients, be they elite and junior hockey players or business executives who want to be physically active.

Good Eating and Sleep Habits Help Kids Succeed in School

Adults often hear what they should be doing to improve their health. But many of these known wellness behaviors are important for kids, too, and two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) experts say school success depends on making the right choices.

Health habits, such as eating and sleep patterns, are linked to academic success, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Your brain can't work if you're not consuming enough calories, and in general that's not a problem," explained Krista Casazza, Ph.D., R.D., assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. "But when kids go to school without eating breakfast, their cognitive function can be affected."

Casazza suggests kids start the day with fruits, proteins and whole grains. Avoid sugary cereals because they cause a sugar high, then a crash.

"A balanced breakfast will fuel the body for a long period and help sustain their attention level through lunch, when they need to eat well again," Casazza said. "This will hold them until dinner, and they won't snack ravenously after school."

Lack of sleep can lead to problems with attention and memory in the classroom, affect impulse control and mood regulation lead to anxiety and even depression," Avis said.

Avis said kids ages 6-12 should get nine hours sleep nightly as should adolescents ages 13-18 - but typically they average little more than seven hours per night.

The Link Between Fast Food and Depression

According to a recent study out of the University of Eastern Finland, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables not only benefits your physical body but also your mental well-being, specifically in regards to depression.

When we’re depressed, it can be tempting to give in and reach for those high fat, high sugary nutrient-lacking foods such as burgers, fries, shakes etc. under the misguided belief that these items will fill the void in our gut and make us feel “good”. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a link between eating those items and depression. In other words, the more you eat them, the greater the likelihood that you will experience depression.

Instead of setting yourself up for depression by eating nutrient-lacking food items full of sugar and fat, choose to eat nutrient dense products full such as low-fat cheese, poultry, fish, berries and whole-grain products. Not only will your body benefit, but so will your mental state of being.

Back injuries can result from heavy lifting, sports, twisting while lifting, or even gardening, any time you’re using the lower back muscles for activities that they aren’t used to. The “new” activity causes muscle spasms, sprained ligaments or herniated (slipped) discs. And pain. It can also be caused by inactivity such as sitting too much and lack of regular movement, leading to premature degeneration of joints and discs. Halting physical activity, with the belief that the pain will disappear, may seem logical but can actually make it all worse.

Seeing your chiropractor on a regular basis, and incorporating regular physical exercise into your life can make all the difference, and keep back pain at bay.
