Chiropractic Adjustments Boost Immune Response
Exciting new findings show that chiropractic adjustments may up production of specific immune markers.
As part of the analysis, 74 asymptomatic subjects were divided into three groups: 1) venipuncture control, 2) chiropractic adjustment with cavitation, or 3) chiropractic adjustment without cavitation. Blood samples were obtained from the study participants before the intervention, 20 minutes after the intervention, and again 2 hours after the intervention. Antibody (immunoglobulin) synthesis was conducted in cultures, and then immunoassays were conducted.
Findings showed that production of immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M was significantly increased in cultures from subjects who received chiropractic adjustments. Specifically, after 20 minutes immunoglobulin G synthesis was significantly elevated in cultures for subjects who received adjustments with cavitation, compared with cultures from those who received adjustments without cavitaion or control subjects. And, after 2 hours, "immunoglobulin M synthesis was significantly elevated in subjects who received adjustments with cavitation relative to the venipuncture group. There were no quantitative alterations within the population of peripheral blood B or T lymphocytes in the studied cultures."

Chiropractic Care for Trigeminal Neuralgia
A case report in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association demonstrates that chiropractic care may offer relief from trigeminal neuralgia.
The study followed the case of a 68 year-old woman. The patient had suffered from trigeminal neuralgia for the past 7.5 years, following surgery for a brain tumor.
According to the article, "after years of unsuccessful management with medication and physical therapies, a therapeutic trial of chiropractic was carried out. Chiropractic care included ultrasound, manual therapies (manipulation and mobilization), soft tissue therapies, and home stretching exercises."
"After an initial treatment period followed by 18 months of supportive care the patient reported satisfactory improvement. It became evident that there were at least three sources of her symptoms: mechanical and/or degenerative neck pain, temporomandibular joint syndrome, and trigeminal neuralgia. While never completely pain-free, the patient continued to report that her pains reduced to minimal at times."
"This case study demonstrates the importance of diagnosing and treating multiple sources of pain and the positive role chiropractic care can have in the management of patients with these clinical conditions."

Blueberries Ward Off Atherosclerosis
Blueberries may help fight atherosclerosis, according to a study in laboratory mice.
The study compared the size, or area, of atherosclerotic lesions in 30 young laboratory mice. Half of the animals were fed diets spiked with freeze-dried blueberry powder for 20 weeks; the diet of the other mice did not contain the berry powder.
Lesion size, measured at two sites on aorta, was 39% and 58% less than that of lesions in mice whose diet did not contain blueberry powder.
The blueberry-spiked diet contained 1 percent blueberry powder, the equivalent of about a half-cup of fresh blueberries.

Study Finds Chiropractic Adjustments Better Than Other Interventions for Acute Low Back Pain
A literature review concludes that Chiropractic adjustments are more effective than other interventions for acute low-back pain (LBP).
The review pooled data from 14 studies, including a total of 2,027 subjects. The patients had suffered LBP for less than 3 months.
The study's authors conclude that: "Results from most studies suggest that 5 to 10 sessions of Chiropractic care administered over 2 to 4 weeks achieve equivalent or superior improvement in pain and function when compared with other commonly used interventions, such as physical modalities, medication, education, or exercise, for short, intermediate, and long-term follow-up. Spine care clinicians should discuss the role of Chiropractic as a treatment option for patients with acute LBP who do not find adequate symptomatic relief with self-care and education alone."

Vitamin B12 May Ward Off Alzheimer's Disease
A new study shows that vitamin B12 may protect against Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Researchers took blood samples from 271 Finnish people, aged 65 to 79, who did not have dementia at the start of the study.
Blood samples were tested for levels for homocysteine and holotranscobalamin (the active portion of the vitamin B12). Too much homocysteine in the blood has been linked to negative effects on the brain, such as stroke. However, higher levels of vitamin B12 lower homocysteine.
At 7-year follow-up, 17 subjects had developed AD.
Results revealed that for each micromolar increase in the concentration of homocysteine, the risk of AD increased by 16%, whereas each picomolar increase in concentration of the active form of vitamin B12 reduced risk by 2%. The results remained after adjusting for other factors of AD, such as age, gender, education, smoking status, blood pressure and body mass index. The addition of folate did not appear to raise or lower the risk of AD.
"Low levels of vitamin B12 are surprisingly common in the elderly. However, the few studies that have investigated the usefulness of vitamin B12 supplements to reduce the risk of memory loss have had mixed results," notes study author Babak Hooshmand, MD, MSc.

Hormone Replacement Therapy HRT Increases Your Risk Of Breast Cancer
Taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) dramatically boosts a woman's risk of dying from breast cancer, according to a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers pooled data on 12,788 women who were followed for 11 years. Women taking HRT were more likely to have more aggressive forms of breast cancer. What's more, the study found that women who took HRT were twice as likely to die from breast cancer, compared to women who took placebo pills.
