Visit to chiropractor restores man's sight
Several news stories appeared on TV and online about Doug Harkey, a man who regained his eyesight after a chiropractic adjustment. Two of the stories appeared on January 11, 2008 in the Telegraph Herald from Dubuque Iowa, and KCRG-TV news from Cedar Rapids Iowa. (Click here to read TV news story and to play video)
Doug Harkey, a 38-year-old resident of Dubuque Iowa, was legally blind in his left eye for 12 years. As he reported it, "I woke up one day and I didn't have vision in one eye." Being legally blind did not limit Mr. Harkey's ambitions as the stories reported that he did parachute out of a plane in 2006.
Doug Harkey's fiancée, Gina Connolly was going to a chiropractor, Dr. Tim Stackis, and convinced Doug to attend a new-patient class. Harkey admitted, "I was skeptical about chiropractic". However, in spite of his skepticism, the stories note that on January 3, 2008 Doug received a chiropractic adjustment, and his world was changed.
Harkey recalled the events after that adjustment, "My blind eye starting watering after I left there and it watered for 45 minutes straight. It started making my good eye water. I went to wipe my right eye and I could see out my left again." His enthusiasm continued as he remarked, "While I wiped my right eye, I could see out of my left." He then told a friend, "Oh my God, I can see!". To which his friend responded, "You always could." Harkey then exclaimed, "No, out of my LEFT eye!"
Dr. Stackis explained in an interview, "I've heard of cases of people regaining their sight, but I've never experienced something like Doug's magnitude. Miracles can happen and some of those miracles are pretty big." He continued his explanation of what happened by noting that some of the bones in Mr. Harkey's neck were out of alignment (subluxation), "That interferes with the messages and energy the brain sends down to the rest of the body." Dr Stackis continued, "Your nerve system controls and regulates every function of your body,"
Harkey concluded his remarks and summed up the situation and optimism for his future by saying, "I'll have everything back except my peripheral vision. In the daytime, it will be great to see everything."
Montel Williams says Chiropractic is Amazing
Montel explains that he can stand up straight without pain for the first time in over 5 years. The extreme neuralgic pain (nerve pain) in his lower extremities, pain in his feet and problems with his balance that have plagued him for the past 5-6 years have begun to resolve after being adjusted using Atlas Orthogonal upper cervical techniques developed by Dr. Roy Sweat.
Friends that know him have noticed a marked change. He is walking differently, his pain is less, and he has regained strength in his leg.
Montel's chiropractor, Dr. Patrick Kerr, explains that this is the direct result of removing pressure on the brain stem resulting from misalignment of the atlas, the top bone of the spine. Dr. Kerr explains how misalignment of the spine causes mechanical compression of the nerve roots that exit the spine, causing all kinds of dysfunction. Properly aligning the spine reestablishes proper communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
Montel explains that misalignment of the spine is frequently a result of trauma in one form or another. When the atlas vertebra is subjected to stresses and strains, it may be pushed out of proper alignment. Trauma may include car accidents (no matter how minor and regardless of immediate symptoms), slips and falls, blows to the head, or sports related injuries. Repetitive micro traumas, such as bad sleeping habits, poor posture, incorrect lifting and carrying can also cause misalignment. In children, often the birth process itself introduces spinal misalignments. The resulting misalignment can cause nerve pressure and inflammation causing a disruption of the normal functioning of the nervous system and interfering with the bodies' ability to function properly, self regulate, adapt and heal.
Montel reiterates near the end of the clip, "It's the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me!"

Here's a great new report talking about Chiropractic care during pregnancy - Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy. Chiropractic care is especially vital during pregnancy to ensure proper nerve flow to the uterus and pelvic muscles. Keeping everything lined up and relaxed significantly reduces delivery time and decreases labor pains.
Chiropractic Adjustments Are Extremely Safe.
A common question is 'how safe is a Chiropractic adjustment?' Another study found "no evidence" of increased risk of stroke associated chiropractic care when compared to medical care.
The study compare the rate of those people who had a stroke and saw a Chiropractor and those who had a stroke and saw a Medical Doctor. The researchers concluded that "the increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and PCP visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke. We found no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated chiropractic care compared to primary care."

Chronic Back Pain Shrinks The Brain
Another study reveals that chronic back pain robs patients of brain material. The evaluation included eight older adults with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and eight pain-free individuals. As part of the study, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tests of neuropsychological were conducted on all participants. In addition, the researchers measured the subjects' volumes of gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), cerebrospinal fluid, and corpus callosum (CC). Chronic pain was determined to be associated with decreased brain volume in several regions. "Older adults with CLBP have structural brain changes in the middle CC, middle cingulate WM, and the GM of the posterior parietal cortex as well as impaired attention and mental flexibility," conclude the study's authors.

The Power Of Your Mind
Did you hear that SSRI medications for depression are no more effective than a placebo? Here's the link to the study. What's a placebo? It is the power of your mind working. You believe the medication works, so it does. Have you heard the phrase 'if you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right'?
In other words you are what you think. So flood your mind with positive thoughts. Say to yourself the words you wish to hear. Invest in a mp3 player and listen to cd's, music, talks, etc, and raise your own body's energy.
What else can you do? Simply 20 minutes of exercise, three times a week can have a profound difference on your mental state. So what's the ultimate? Get adjusted, and then go for a 20 minute walk while listening to an encouraging cd or music. Check out our past newsletter issues for even more tips.
It's All In Your Head
Have you ever heard that 'Chiropractic doesn't really work, it's all in your head'? People who have never experienced the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments may say this to you. Guess what, they are correct, just not in the way they meant. When you have spinal subluxations, it causes interference in the transmission of nerve impulses from your head to your entire body. This mis-communication results in dis-ease (a body that is no longer at 'ease' with itself). So the problem is in your head - the problem is that your brain doesn't receive nor send clear messages to the body about what's going on.
Now if they are thinking Chiropractic doesn't work, and it is all a placebo (studies show placebos can be 30-40% effective - talk about a powerful mind - it's more powerful than SSRI medications), then ask them how does a new born or a young child experience amazing results with Chiropractic adjustments. Or why do horses, dogs, cats and other animals also experience the benefits of being adjusted?
Share your experience with others, so everyone can experience the benefit of Chiropractic adjustments.
